이수홍 Lee, Soo Hong (b.1961)

이수홍은 안과 밖, 정체성과 문화적 차이 사이의 긴장과 조화를 지속적으로 다뤄온 한국의 조각가이다. 대표 연작인 〈Inside–Outside (Interspace)〉는 나무를 비롯한 자연 재료를 수직적이고 구조적인 형태로 구축하며, 자연의 질서 안에서 발견되는 균형과 순환의 원리를 조형적으로 드러낸다. 작가가 경험한 이주와 서로 다른 문화와의 만남에서 출발한 작업은 공존과 정체성, 소속이라는 보다 보편적인 문제로 확장된다.

1961년 서울에서 태어난 이수홍은 홍익대학교 조소과에서 학사(1984)와 석사(1989)를 마친 뒤, 1992년 뉴욕 프랫 인스티튜트에서 석사학위를 받았다. 2007년부터 2008년까지는 뉴욕주립대학교(SUNY) Visiting Artists Program에 참여했다. 지난 40여 년간 한국적 감각과 국제적인 경험을 바탕으로 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축해왔다.

1994년 석남미술상, 1997년 김세중청년조각상, 2018년 문신미술상을 수상했다. 금호미술관, 김세중미술관, 뉴욕  등을 포함해 20여 회의 개인전을 열었으며, 1996년 바젤 아트페어와 2024년 아트센트럴 홍콩을 비롯해 서울, 도쿄, 후쿠오카, 베이징, 뉴욕, 피에트라산타 등 국내외에서 140여 회의 그룹전 및 초대전에 참여했다.

작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 홍익대학교 현대미술관, 모란미술관, 대만 타이중 산이 목조박물관, 기당미술관, 싱가포르 보타닉 가든을 비롯한 국내외 여러 공공기관과 미술기관 및 개인 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.

이수홍의 조각은 재료에 대한 치밀한 탐구와 절제된 구조를 통해 인간과 자연, 안과 밖, 서로 다른 문화와 정체성이 맺는 관계를 물리적인 형태로 구현한다. 그의 작품에서 조각은 하나의 단단한 물체인 동시에, 서로 다른 영역이 만나고 균형을 이루는 공간으로 존재한다.

Artist Profile

Lee Soohong is a Korean sculptor whose practice explores the dialogue between inside and outside—between identity, cultural difference, and the possibility of coexistence. Best known for his seminal series Inside–Outside (Interspace), Lee shapes natural materials—often wood—into poised vertical structures that embody balance, rhythm, and cyclical renewal in nature. His works function both as physical presences and contemplative thresholds, inviting viewers to reflect on how matter, memory, and place converge.

Lee was born in Seoul in 1961 and earned his BFA (1984) and MFA (1989) in Sculpture from Hongik University before completing an MFA at Pratt Institute, New York (1992). He later joined the Visiting Artists Program at SUNY (2007–2008). Over four decades, he has developed a distinct sculptural language that bridges Korean sensibility with international perspectives—presented through museum exhibitions, public projects, and major art fairs across Asia, Europe, and the United States.

His practice has been recognized with the Seoknam Art Prize (1994), the Kim Sejoong Young Sculptor Prize (1997), and the Moonshin Art Award (2018). Lee’s works are housed in leading public collections in Korea and abroad, underscoring the continued relevance of his quiet, architectural sculptures within contemporary sculpture today.
